Scottie’s Place Contributors

In an ongoing effort to bring quality programs to children affected by homelessness, displacement, and a lack of resources, Scottie’s Place collaborates with nongovernmental organizations, nonprofits, schools, social services and faith-based organizations. Shelter personnel and families refer children to the Wilderness Adventure summer camp; churches, civic groups, businesses and foundations provide invaluable volunteer assistance, donations and transportation; and dozens of student groups from Virginia Tech to Ithaca College, from Boston College to the University of Charleston raise funds and volunteer at Scottie’s Place. Over the past ten years, hundreds of individuals and thousands of donors from across the country have provided volunteer support, advocacy and financial assistance to Scottie’s Place.

Gene Oltz and Lisa Jenkins Oltz have supported Scottie’s Place since its inception in 1999. Here’s why:

When Paul and Jo-El told me back in 1999 that they were starting a therapeutic wilderness camp for at-risk children, I was just thrilled! Within moments, I knew that I would be a life-long advocate and supporter of their mission. Having known Paul and Jo-El for many years, I was confident that they would do whatever it took to make the camp a transformative experience for children. This indeed has been the case. I have visited during the camp sessions and seen, first hand, the sense of wonder and, most importantly, security in the children’s eyes. I have listened to campers excitedly recount the many things they have learned during their stay and how these things have made them stronger. Now, thirteen years later, I am lucky to have Lisa in my life and have her share my enthusiasm for Scottie’s Place. Lisa and I have always been committed to initiatives that inspire and nurture our next generation, especially those causes that strive to give children from more turbulent environments a better opportunity in life. We also know that our contributions to Scottie’s Place go almost entirely to programming for the campers. We recently returned from a visit to Scottie’s Place knowing that our contributions have found the perfect home for making a maximum impact on children’s lives.
