PROGRAMS AND ELIGIBILITY

Scotties Place is a wilderness adventure camp designed solely and especially for children who have been affected by homelessness. The programs at Scottie's Place emphasize pioneer living, wilderness adventure and community service. Responsibility to the earth, to one's self and to one's neighbor are predominant themes. The programs at Scottie's Place are offered year-round. Programs include two-week sessions throughout the summer, two-week sessions during the intercessions of year-round schools, weekend programs for local children and holiday and reunion programs throughout the year.

Scottie's Place serves children who currently reside in shelters or transitional housing and delivers to them an exciting program that challenges their ideas about the world and their perceived place in it. Through four seasons, the staff and counselors welcome children from shelters within a 500 mile radius of the camp for adventures in fun and learning. No previous wilderness experience is required and there is no fee for any child. Scottie's Place provides transportation and all necessary provisions for a child's stay including appropriate clothing.

Case workers, teachers and clergy refer children to Scottie's Place. Scottie's Place will accept children, ages eight to eighteen, who are mature enough to be separated from their family for two-week sessions. We welcome sibling groups and youth separated from their families by crisis or policy. Children should be basically healthy and willing to participate. Because this is a wilderness camp with primary concern for the safety of all, children with a history of drug or alcohol abuse, criminal activities, violent behavior or other destructive habits should not be referred to the camp. Our child:staff ratio is 3:1.

Scottie's Place is a world of breathtaking beauty that offers children the opportunity to be challenged and invigorated as well as a chance to rest and heal. It is our goal that children find a new self awareness at Scottie's Place - an awareness of their potential for greatness in this world.
